On August 24, 1862 the Confederate States of America launched the sloop of war know as the CSS Alabama. Under Captain Ralph Semmes, CSS Alabama spent the next 22 months capturing and burning ships in the North Atlantic and intercepting ships bound for Europe. In all total the CSS Alabama captured or destroyed over 60 vessels, this included two dozen Union merchant ships and sunk the highly acclaimed USS Hatteras. During that period she took 2,000 prisoners and an estimated $6,000,000 in goods. The CSS Alabama is considered the most successful confederate war ship ever built. On June 19, 1864 the CSS Alabama engaged the Kersage in an epic confrontation. The CSS Alabama fired over 150 shots to the Kersage's 100 shots, but this would be the end for the CSS Alabama. She received a fatal shot that tore open the hull and sank within a few hours after engagement.
