Size: Kings tend to school until they reach about 20 pounds when they will become loners. Individual fish can run up to 50 pounds or better. Florida hold the world record at 90 pounds.
Where found: Near shore and Offshore, occasionally taken from piers running into deep water. Also taken off reefs and ledges.
Remarks: Schooling fish that migrates from south Florida waters in winter to more northerly waters in spring. The Gulf population is thought to be separate from Atlantic population with considerable mixing in winter from Cape Canaveral through the Keys. King spawn in midsummer offshore. They feeds on small fish and squid.
Fishing: Slow trolling live or rigged baits on 20 to 30 pound test line is usually the fastest way to locate fish. The best trolled bait is a rigged Ribbon Fish (Atlantic Cutlassfish). Drifting or at anchor using either live or dead baits free lined behind the boat is also productive. The best areas to concentrate are around bait pods or reefs.
