Description: Reddish or bronze, lighter shade in clear waters, with a white underside. Ringed spot on base of tail. One spot is most common some fish with many and on a rare occasion one without any spot.
Size: Catches to 30 pounds are not uncommon. The world record is 94 pounds, 2 ounces. The Florida record is 51 pounds, 8 ounces.
Where found: Juveniles are an Inshore fish, migrating out of the estuaries at about 30 inches (4 years) and joining the spawning population Offshore.
Remarks: Red drum are Inshore species until they attain roughly 30 inches (4 years), then migrate to join the near shore population. Spawning occurs from August to November in near shore waters. Redfish feed on crustaceans, fish, and mollusks; longevity to 20 years of more.
Fishing: Light to medium rods for average fish with Shrimp or small baitfish being the best live bait (Finger mullet, Pilchard, Shrimp, and small crabs) with cut bait also working. Artificial lures (weed less spoons, plastic jigs, and top water plugs) thrown along beaches, bridges, piers, and marshes are productive spots.
