Description: Silvery color with bluish or greenish back with a slender, round body. The snout is long, conical, aiming downward and overhanging lower jaw. Dark streaks are visible between scales on upper half of body and faint cross bands extending down to lateral line. The extremities of dorsal and caudal fins shaded with black.
Size: Common up to 10 pounds and possibly to 18 to 20. The world record is 19 pounds and the Florida record is 15 pounds, 6 ounces.
Where found: Primarily inshore fish inhabiting shallows of south Florida. Found in shallows often less than 1 foot deep, usually over lush grass flats, occasionally over white sand.
Remarks: Travels in loose schools; roots out shrimp, shellfish, crabs, and fish from the bottom; spawns offshore; eggs hatching into ribbon-like larvae that metamorphose into fish-like form at about 2 inches and move inshore.
Fishing: Sight fishing the most common with light spinning outfits or with fly rods. Live shrimp is the best bait for spinning outfits and small streamer for the fly fishermen.
