Built in 1791, Portland Head was the first lighthouse in America completed by the federal government. The 80-foot tall stone and brick tower sits at the southwest entrance to Portland Harbor to protect all vessels from the dangers of the rocky Maine coastline. Portland Head is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine, as its image is used in many different venues.
