A bottom-dwelling fish of many titles, the gray grouper is also known as black grouper, Copper Belly or Black Belly. This sculpture is derived from a trophy grouper that was restled from the deep waters offshore Port Canaveral. This mount can be custom-colored to appear as a Black Belly or a female.
Description: Gray to light brown with wavy markings on side; strong serrated spur at bottom margin of preopercle, less noticeable in large specimens; fins dark, with anal and caudal having white margin. Often confused with black grouper; most noticeable differences are brassy spots on black grouper; tail of gag is slightly concave, black is square; gag has white margin on anal and caudal fins, black does not; under 10 pounds, gag''s spur on preopercle is distinctive, where black is gently rounded.
Size: Reaches 50 pounds on deep offshore wrecks and ledges, and has been recorded up to 80 pounds. 20 - 30 pounds is the usual maximum range, where the average caught is between 2 - 25 pounds. World record is 80 pounds, 6 ounces. Florida record is 71 pounds, 3 ounces.
Where found: Found at any fishable depth throughout Florida and the Bahamas, from deep grass flats to offshore reefs and ledges.
Remarks: Forms spawning fish cluster in water no shallower than 120 feet in Middle Grounds area, January through March; current research to identify similar aggregations off Atlantic coast is ongoing. Young gags are predominantly female, transforming into males as they grow larger; feeds on fish and squid.
Fishing: The most common fishing methods are drifting and at anchor using frisky live baits fish (Grunts, Pinfish, Pilchards or any small fish). Dead baits may be used whole or as cut bait (chunked). Jigs tipped with bait will also produce fish as will trolling or casting lures and plug along deep grass flats or shallow reefs.
